A Quieter Christmas In Iraq

The spiritual leader of Iraq's Catholics made a Christmas appeal Monday for all those who have fled Iraq to return and help rebuild their shattered homeland, acknowledging that fear still persists even as the country enjoys one of its most peaceful holiday seasons in years.

Cardinal Emmanuel III Delly, leader of the ancient Chaldean Church, told The Associated Press at his guarded compound in west Baghdad that his message was one of love and charity for everyone.

"And for the emigrants to return home, to work for the good of their country and their homeland despite the situation which their country is in -- that is my hope.

Muslim clerics—both Sunni and Shiite—also attended the service in a sign of unity.

So far the holiday season has been peaceful. Last December, more than 2,300 people died in war-related violence compared to about 540 so far this month, according to an AP count

I have read and own a copy of Mark Steyn's "America Alone". Will Faisel Joseph, the Canadian Islamic Council, Khurrum Awan, & Naseem Mithoowani try to sue me for reading it and disagreeing with their bogus assessment that it is "islamaphobic" in nature??
Will the Canadian Human Rights Council come after me?

Naseem Mithoowani, one of the Osgoode Hall law students bringing forward the complaint, said the article was one of a series of articles offensive to Muslims.

Khurrum Awan, another of the students, said the group will argue before the commissions that such articles tend to subject Muslims to hatred or contempt.

So a well written piece that deals with the reality of DEMOGRAPHY is what Khurrum Awan, Naseem Mithoowani, and the Canadian Islamic Congress, really believe subjects Muslims to hatred or contempt; yet they take NO issue with the actions of a MUSLIM man KILLING his MUSLIM daughter for NOT wearing her head-dress OR when Muslims hijack planes and fly them into buildings MURDERING innocent civilians, OR when Muslims train suicide bombers who then MURDER innocent civilians in London & Madrid, OR when they live in MY birth Country and are arrested as they come close to acting on their plot to plant bombs in knapsacks in the Eaton Center where my friends and family shop, OR when one of the Muslim wives of one of those Muslim men arrested, maintains a website that spews forth HER hatred for this "filthy country", and her love of Jihad!

Not the spiritual kind of jihad of which the Koran speaks of, but the twisted "let's kill all the infidels" kind of jihad that Muslim terrorists live and die by.

To paraphrase what Khurrum Awan said: if you look at the theme of that Muslim women's website & the actions taken by Muslim extremists GLOBALLY, combined with the NON ACTION taken in opposition to those Muslims whose hateful speeches, books, websites, and actions are all done in the name of Mohammed and Islam, I-as a non Muslim- feel personally victimized.

In his recent blog post, Mr Garry J. Wise, a Canadian lawyer writes:

" I cannot imagine any basis upon which any of the human rights commissions involved would ultimately rule against Steyn or Macleans on these complaints."

IF this is true - then WHY is the complaint even being considered?
This is nothing more than an attempt to challenge the very law he claims will protect Macleans.

Mr Wise alleges that if Steyn had said these same things in a workplace and not as journalist, his facts on demography would fit the description of racial toxicity and discrimination.

Unlike the endless toxicity spewed forth in rap lyrics aired on radio daily or the endless toxicity found on website run by a Muslim woman who spews forth her hatred for "this filthy country" and talks proudly of being able to annul her marriage to her husband should he refuse to take part in jihad against "infidels"....and by jihad she didn't mean the spiritual jihad the Koran embraces.

Perhaps Khurrum Awan, Naseem Mithoowani, and The Canadian Islamic Council might want to consider the REAL reasons all Muslims might be subjected to hatred and contempt:

How many "moderate" Muslims stood up in solidarity with non Muslims at the OUTRAGEOUS actions of the Sudanese gov't when thet falsely accused , and then arrested , a teacher for disrespecting Islam, when it was her MUSLIM student who named his teddy bear Mohamed? Why didn't Khurrum Awan, Naseem Mithoowani,and the Canadian Islamic Congress,stand up for HER human rights, which were repeatedly violated ? After all she didn't name the bear, a MUSLIM boy did.

The fact that the world Muslim community didn't stand up for HER human rights, and that the only Muslims who took the streets in protest were those who wanted her KILLED, speaks volumes as to WHY all Muslims might just be subjected to hatred and contempt.

By remaining silent, The Canadian Islamic Congress, as well as Khurrum Awan, Naseem Mithoowani, and even my moderate Muslim friends, become complicit in the actions of Muslim extremists.


And what about Irshad Manji's human rights which were extremely violated when a fatwa was issued against her for having the courage to bring to light the trouble with Islam, in her honest and thought provoking book aptly named " The Trouble With Islam".

I didn't hear Faisel Joseph, and the Canadian Islamic Council, or any of these four law students, offering to defend her human rights against Muslims who threatened her life. Or is her right to publish a book discussing the problems endemic to Islam a violation of some Canadian law as well as some Islamic law that we are not aware of?

You know what other actions are likely to subject Muslims to hatred and contempt: when four Muslim law students and Faisal Joseph, from the Canadian Islamic Congress, are trying to make a name for themselves by filing ludicrous, baseless complaints with the federal, Ontario and British Columbia human rights commissions over an October 2006 article.

As annoyed as I am with this blatant attempt to inflame passions and anger between non Muslims and Muslims, what's really pathetic and beyond contempt is that the Canadian "Human Rights" Council has caved in to these four students baseless and biased demands, no doubt under fear of retaliation by so called 'moderate Muslims".

Thankfully the Muslim Canadian Congress understands the fundamental basis of "freedom of expression" and what factors might honestly be contributing to hatred and contempt of Muslims, vs nonsense put forth by spotlight seekers. The Muslim Canadian Congress works hard to alleviate hatred towards Muslims and have been very successful - while what the Canadian Islamic Council, along with Naseem, Khurrum and the other two law students are doing is both counterproductive to their efforts and successes, and only serves to inflame anger, hatred, and contempt towards all Muslims - the very thing they claim they are trying to prevent!!

Faisal Joseph, a lawyer from the Canadian Islamic Congress who is representing the four students, argued that journalists can't write just anything.

But apparently the wife of a man arrested as part of an Islamic terrorist group in Toronto can "write just anything" on her website and by anything I mean hate filled vile diatribes against Canadians.

If you are truly concerned, Faisel, about writings that subject Muslims to hatred and contempt, why did you not stand up TO her, and take legal action against her? After all, spewing forth that kind of vile hatred towards NON Muslims and Muslims who refuse to live a fundamentalist life style does far more harm to all Muslims - subjecting them all to hatred and contempt - than a fact based article the on demography that discusses the high birth rate among Muslims in Europe and speculates that Islamic people could become the majority population in Europe in the not too distant future. It also says some Muslims are violent radicals.

So if I lay claim that the Asian population could become the majority population in Toronto or Vancouver in the not to distant future, and mention that SOME Asians are violent, is that considered hate filled talk in violation of Asian Human Rights, and am I subjecting them to hatred and contempt??

There is NOTHING in that chapter in Mark's book or in that article in Macleans, which merely discusses the realities of demography, that would in anyway subject Muslims to hatred and contempt.

However the same cannot be said about this ludicrous lawsuit four Muslim students and the Canadian Islamic Congress are bringing forward.

From where I sit, it is Mark Steyn who is being discriminated against and victimized.

Against all the odds, an optimistic prediction comes true

“Iraq is more peaceful in 2007 than at any time since the 2003 invasion”.

By any measure, the US-led surge has been little short of a triumph. The number of American military fatalities is reduced sharply, as is the carnage of Iraqi civilians, Baghdad as a city is functioning again, oil output is above where it stood in March 2003 but at a far stronger price per barrel and, the acid test, many of those who fled to Syria and Jordan are today returning home.

The self-evident success of the surge has obliged the Democrats to start talking about almost anything else and the calls to cut and run have abated. If the US Army remains in Iraq in strength, continuing on its present path, then deals on a constitution and the division of oil revenues between provinces will be realised.

One prominent American politician alone has spent that time publicly demanding the extra soldiers which, in 2007, have been Iraq's salvation. That statesman is John McCain.

Behind the most important story of the year, Iraq, stands the Man Of The Year.

That the surge has worked is no longer up for debate. On a trip to Iraq the week after Thanksgiving, even John Murtha stated flatly, “I think the surge is working.” And in recent months the Democratic presidential candidates have accepted this reality too, sparring more over health-care plans than over who will pull out troops fastest.

Of course, the situation in Iraq is still parlous, and military successes will not automatically produce the national reconciliation necessary for long-term peace and stability. No one knows this better than Petraeus, who has forthrightly admitted that political progress in Iraq has been disappointing.

That Petraeus has achieved so much in such a short time despite the frustrations of Iraqi politics is a testament to his skill as a strategist and a leader of men.

For making victory in Iraq look possible again, and for pulling a nation back from the brink of civil war, (General David) Petraeus deserves the praise and thanks of all Americans. With or without a Time cover, he is the man of the year.

General Petraeus has demonstrated perhaps the most common trait of the American soldier as well as the least commonly recognized. Improvision and adaptability have long been the hallmarks of the American soldier from revolutionary times through such notables as Sherman and Patton, to Petraeus himself. While serving under General Casey, Petraeus was the good subordinant soldier, but was all the time polishing his views on how geurilla warfare should be conducted. And, for once, there was a valuable lesson from Viet Nam. Like Patton before him, he was disinclined to give any territory taken back to the enemy. The failed policies of his predecessor held no illusions for General Petraeus; he got soldier's asses in the grasses and kept them there.

As late as yesterday morning I've heard from one of the useful idiots on NPR that all of this means little as the government of Iraq is still disfunctional on a national basis. While this may be true and also undesirable, it may not be exactly the most important point of the new reality in Iraq. The truth is that, in all governments-but especially democracies- the local governments are far more important than the federal government. Americans can work up a certain amount of lather over the inefficiencies of the post office, but nothing compared to what they're capable of if their town misses their curb at leaf pick up time. Try changing the local parking plan downtown of a small community. You'll have irregulars atop the hardware store just waiting for a clean shot at the planning commision.

The US Congress, comfortable in it's arrogance, assured of it's relevance, fails to see the merits of democracy from the bottom up. It's bad enough that they wish to rule their own citizen's lives from Washington, DC; they think they're best qualified to run the Iraqi's as well. Were I in possesion of only a fraction of the oil that Iraq possesses I'd be awful damn sure I'd keep it as far away as possible from the princes of pork in Washington. The smallest tribal sheik will question why the US government needs to subsidize the most productive agricultural industry in the world and cannot seem to figure out how to fund social security. Better off to trust a Marine. Marine's actually do what they say they're going to do. And so do soldiers.

For this we can thank General David H. Petraeus, the only choice for MAN OF THE YEAR.

Cass Dillion 's powerful rendition was made even more evocative when soldiers joined him on stage. Seeing the soldiers on stage and hearing them add some background vocals towards the end of this song, moved me deeply.

I realize that this is being considered an 'anti war' but 'pro troop' song, and this might anger pedantic right wing bloggers, but I refuse to give extreme voices on either side of the political spectrum any gravitas. This song supports our troops, it's beloved by them, and proceeds go to helping our Vets. Billy loves our troops, he may or may not agree that this was the right war to risk their lives- I cannot speak to that, but he most sincerely respects them, their mission, wants it completed, and was deeply moved and inspired by their letters to him.

Personally, I love this song. It's haunting & powerful. We live in a country where the right to express different opinions is a treasured freedom, worth dying for, and along with many freedoms most Americans seem to take for granted, it is at the heart of why our men and women are fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Anti war, pro troops works for me, and should work for those on the right. Who in their right mind is PRO WAR? We are pro victory. We are PRO TROOP. Some may not have "voted" for this mission,or believe this was the battle in the war on terrorism that we needed to fight, but they do support our troops, want the mission to succeed, and want nothing less than for our troops to come home safe, whenever that may be.

I 've been a fan of hers since my days as a bizbabe in Hollywild, when her show premiered on KABC in 1993.

The former president of the LA Chapter of NOW, she is an openly gay, pro-choice, gun owning, pro-death penalty voted for President Bush authentic feminist, life long Democrat, with a brand of feminism that places her somewhere between Donna Reed and Thelma & Louise!

I can only catch her show on the weekend, online, since I moved from LA to the East coast, but she is one of the few things I miss about LA, along with Fish Tacos, my friend Max, and the awesome weather.

I 'll be back in LA in Feb for an Oscar related event I m producing - if I survive the one I m producing at Sundance in January, but in the meantime, there's always her blog when I m 'jonesing' during the day and Tammy Radio on the Saturday nights.

From Iraq To Afghanistan in Films

2007 began with Iraq war themed films and appears to be ending with Afghanistan war themed films.

The Iraq themed films have been massive failures, achieving dismal box office revenues, but will the same be true for these Afghanistan themed films?

"The Kite Runner"

Scheduled to be released just prior to Christmas; based on the moving, powerful, evocative runaway global bestselling novel from Afghan author Khaled Hosseini .

The film, unlike the novel, opens in Afghanistan in 1979 at the time of the Russian invasion, moves to California, and returns to Kabul in the late 1990's, during it's Taliban imposed rule. An extremely powerful story set against the political turmoil of Afghanistan, "The Kite Runner" explores themes of friendship, honor, community, betrayal and redemption.

While the film was not shot in Afghanistan, most of the actors will be speaking Dari---the film will be subtitled.

The novel is far better and more detailed at exploring the complex ethnic and social issues in Afghanistan than the film allows time for. But nonetheless David Benioff's screenplay adaption makes this film Oscar worthy!

Best-selling Afghan author Khaled Hosseini has pleaded with the United States and its allies not to abandon Afghanistan, warning without their help the land of his birth is doomed.

Hosseini, whose novel "The Kite Runner" is a runaway global bestseller and has been turned into a film, said that "without a genuine and sustained long-term commitment on the part of the United States and its allies, Afghanistan is doomed."

"Charlie Wilson's War"

Based on a true story,and the book of the same name, stars Tom Hanks, and Julia Roberts, and is scheduled to be released December 27th.

"Afghanistan The Forgotten War".
Freelance Photojournalist Scott Kesterson (who served with the Oregon National Guard 41st Brigade in the 80's) came to my attention last year through the blog of a soldier who was serving with the 41st Brigade Oregon National Guard, which had recently deployed to Afghanistan.

We emailed back and forth and he introduced me to the work of Scott Kesterson . Scott had served with the 41st Brigade during the 1980's, and as such, had a personal interest in documenting this deployment and in telling this narrative.

For 16 months, Scott lived along side this unit as they mobilized at Camp Shelby, Mississippi and then deployed to Afghanistan .This unit was tasked with training the Afghan National Army, so Scott had access to Afghans and our Military in Afghanistan in a way no other journalist truly had.

I had not been aware when I was initially introduced to his work, that Scott was documenting his day to day experiences in an online blog courtesy of KGW.com:

"My focus is and will be the human part of the story; that element that too often gets passed over in the face of headlines and dramatic events. I am a strong believer that the real drama is what happens in the lives of people through the events of the day to day."

I'm in Afghanistan right now working with the Afghan National Police. (ANP) They have lots of problems and issues, but they know what they are doing. The support they receive from the Ministry of Interior,(MOI) and the communication they do not recieve from the other ministry's; effectively neuters them. In my daily experience; U.S. and NATO forces here are not funded, resourced or manned at a level necessary to either respond effectively to the MOI's limitations or to negate it's largely negative impact. Ergo; 61 dead school children in my Baglhan Province two weeks ago. Keep your hanky handy, the bad news is just beginning. Afghanistan currently has two exports; opium and denial!

Where implemented, international development and reconstruction efforts have been underfunded and failed to have a significant impact on local communities’ living conditions, or improve attitudes towards the Afghan Government and the international community.

Now we have AP writer, Glen Johnson's fan letter to Hillary being passed off as political "analysis".

Why shouldn't she be the picture of calm?? Was she attacked? Was she held hostage? Did Al Queda fly a plane into a building filled with innocent civilians on her watch? Did a plethora of suicide bombers walk into malls across the country and wreak devastation?

A SIEGE?? What made for tv movie was he watching?. It was ONE MAN who WALKED quietly into her office!!

How exactly is that a "siege"?? You'd think the Crips & Bloods, or Islamic fanatics, had stormed the place! From this analysis one has to wonder if she was on the verge of deploying the National Guard?

As a writer, you'd think Glen would know the the definition of "siege" :

1. The surrounding and blockading of a city, town, or fortress by an army attempting to capture it.
2. A prolonged period, as of illness: a siege of asthma.
3. Obsolete A seat, especially a throne.

Talk about embellishing the truth with a few well chosen words in order to paint a distorted picture. But then again, painting distorted pictures rather than honestly reporting facts is what defines the MSM today.

WHAT disorder was SHE facing?? Was New Orleans ravaged by another Hurricane?? Did riots break out in the streets of LA again?? Was the US attacked? Were chemical or biological weapons released??? Were IEDS exploding throughout New Hampshire??

Hillary sat in the comfort of her home, surrounded by the secret service, and her "loving husband" watching events unfold on CNN, and working the phones!

Before she set foot in front of the cameras, she had already spent hours having her press team write the "heartfelt" speech she'd deliver if all went well, and the "heartbreaking" speech she'd deliver if any causalities had occurred , while her hair and make up crew helped her to "look the picture of calm" . Must be hard to look regal under such tough conditions!!

What a woman of fortitude she is!

I m glad the incident ended peacefully. Clearly the man was troubled.

But what does it say about Hillary that she'd use someone else's misfortune to benefit herself and that the press would enable her to do so?

Until this moment of misfortune occurred, the news cycle had been focused on yet ANOTHER inane comment made by Bill Clinton:

"Even though I approved of Afghanistan and opposed Iraq from the beginning, I still resent that I was not asked or given the opportunity to support those soldiers."

which, apart from being a FUCKING LIE, and a big slap in the face to Hillary since she DID support the invasion of Iraq, enabled Bill to yet again overshadow Hillary.

But not for long: some whack job comes along, ties a few old flares to his chest, and suddenly Hillary's doing a rehearsal for another domestic Al Qaeda hit.
